Brewster

Brewster, or their Indian name, Potenumacut, was first a part of Harwich. They broke away in 1656 but didn’t officially incorporate until 1803. The name is from Elder William Brewster who was the first religious leader of Plymouth Colony. The town flourished around Stony Brook. It was here in the early 1600s that a grist mill and a woolen mill, the first in the country, were established. Brewster was also the home of many of the wealthy sea captains. They built large and fashionable homes, many of which are still in use today as inns or bed-and-breakfasts.

Brewster today is largely a residential town. To take a drive and see many of the old sea captains homes is a nice way to spend a day. Along the way, you will notice many antique shops, quaint restaurants and art galleries. Brewster has three museums that are well worth a visit. The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, the Brewster Historical Society Museum and the New England Fire & History Museum are open year ‘round. There is a very old store, The Brewster General Store, full of different and fun things to buy or just to look at. Brewster also has a team in the Cape Cod Baseball League. They are the Whitecaps and their home field is Stony Brook Field.
